São Paulo (AP) – Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is doing better after being admitted to the hospital because of an intestinal obstruction, according to official information.
The government of the South American country said he was showing clinical improvement after inserting a nasogastric tube, citing the clinic in São Paulo. Bolsonaro has neither a fever nor a stomach ache. The government said he took a short walk in the hallways of the hospital. Whether another intervention is necessary is still being checked.
The 66-year-old right-wing populist had been admitted to the hospital the night before with pain in his abdomen.
Attack in the 2018 election campaign
At the weekend, Bolsonaro had shown himself on two beaches in the state of Santa Catarina and thus triggered crowds of people. From there, according to media reports, he was taken on an Air Force plane to the metropolis of São Paulo, some 500 kilometers away. His doctor was reportedly in the Bahamas but canceled the vacation.
At an election campaign event in September 2018, a mentally confused man stabbed Bolsonaro and seriously injured him in the stomach. The ex-military then continued the election campaign from the hospital. He was elected the following month. Even after he took office in early 2019, he was operated on. Among other things, his intestinal tract had to be restored. South America’s largest country is due to have elections in October. Bolsonaro is applying for a second term.
The president had already been diagnosed with an intestinal obstruction in July. Bolsonaro was then treated for several days in the Vila Nova Star clinic in São Paulo. This confirmed in a message that it was again an intestinal obstruction. The state of the politician was stable, it said. The doctors did not commit to a prognosis as to when he could be released again.
