Users reported to AFP that they were able to access tycoon Elon Musk‘s platform again, after the supreme court authorized its reactivation on Tuesday after paying a million-dollar fine.
X was banned since August 30 in the largest country in Latin America, where it has 22 million users.
The enthusiasm among users was immediately reflected in the “trending topics”, which celebrate the unlocking with tags such as “Voltou” (he returned) or “I’m back” (I’m back).
The reactivation of X occurs progressively and irregularly, with Internet users who have verified unrestricted access and others who still cannot enter.
The telecommunications regulatory agency Anatel explained that the delay depends on the measures used by internet providers “based on their specificities.”
Before being authorized to operate again, the platform had to pay fines of 28.6 million reais (5.2 million dollars).
It also had to previously deactivate accounts accused of disinformation, some of them linked to an ongoing investigation into “digital militias” and appoint a legal representative in Brazil.
“Time of restrictions”
Federal Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes authorized the unblocking on Tuesday after considering that the platform had responded to judicial requirements.
Moraes and Musk had a controversy around the limits of freedom of expression and the regulation of social networks.
The social network “has a good side and a bad side” because “it disrupts people’s lives a lot, with negative comments, etc.,” said Abi García, a 22-year-old student in Sao Paulo.
“If people used it as a way of knowledge and improvement it would be much better,” he lamented to AFP.
Businesswoman Lilian Lazarini, 50, instead criticized the suspension: “We live in a time restricted from many things that we should not. Freedom of expression has to exist here and that is why we fight.”
Musk’s social network celebrated the decision.
“X is proud to return to Brazil (…) We will continue to defend freedom of expression, within the limits of the law, everywhere we operate,” he said in a message on his global affairs account.
The Brazilian Minister of Communications, Juscelino Filho, described it as a “triumph” that the social network complied with the sentences.
“We have shown the world that the laws must be respected here, no matter who it is. “Brazil is sovereign,” he said in a statement.

Human Rights Watch was critical of X and the supreme and considered that the episode should serve as a “warning.”
“The protection of rights cannot depend on the whims of corporations and the excesses of the authorities,” he stressed in a statement.
