The government of the Brazilian state of Sao Paolo and the Brazilian State Butantane Institute announced on Wednesday that the CoronaVac vaccine developed by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac Life Science had been confirmed to be effective. In studies with 13,000 Brazilian volunteers, the vaccine achieved the effectiveness against the coronavirus required by the World Health Organization (WHO).
“The data confirm that it is the safest vaccine on the market and that it has reached the lower limit of effectiveness required by the WHO and the Brazilian health authorities,” said Dimas Covas, director of the institute, at a press conference. It was a historic day for the scientific community and the people of the country because it brought hope to the Brazilians, Covas said.
Gorinchteyn, the state’s health minister, said it plans to start vaccinating nationwide for those most at risk from the virus on January 25, 2021. According to the minister, a shipment of 5.5 million cans from China will arrive in Brazil on Thursday. The next two deliveries should follow on December 28th and 30th.
