Astrud Gilberto: First Brazilian Grammy winner
Over the course of her long career, Astrud Gilberto has released 16 studio albums and two live records. In 1963 she recorded an English version of the song “Garota de Ipanema” composed a year earlier by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. With this interpretation she won the 1965 Grammy Award – the first to be given to a Brazilian singer.
Daughter of a German emigrant
Gilberto was born on March 20, 1940 in Salvador de Bahia as the daughter of a German father and a Brazilian mother. From 1959 she was married to bossa nova star João Gilberto. However, the marriage broke up in the late 1960s.
