The Federal Police of Brazil filed charges this Thursday (11/21/2024) against former president Jair Bolsonaro for the alleged coup plot that sought to overthrow the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, after the 2022 elections, official sources reported.
The institution denounced 37 people, including several high-ranking military officers, for the crimes of “violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état and illicit association,” as reported in a note.
Bolsonaro, who governed the country between 2019 and 2022, is among those targeted by the Federal Police, as well as some generals, former ministers and former advisors to his Government.
On the list is Walter Braga Netto, general of the Army reserve and who was Minister of the Presidency and Defense, as well as Bolsonaro’s candidate for vice president in 2022; and Almir Garnier Santos, former Navy commander.
The investigation confirmed the existence of a plot that acted “in a coordinated manner”, after the 2022 elections, to “try to keep” Bolsonaro in power.
This same week, Brazilian authorities arrested four soldiers and a Federal Police agent accused of devising a plan for the assassination of Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes, investigator of the case.
The objective, according to the investigation, was to assassinate Lula and Alckmin, and create a “crisis committee” made up of military members sympathetic to Bolsonaro. The plans considered poisoning as a way to end the life of the formula that won the 2022 elections.
