Brazilian institutions suffer short-term cyberattacks

Rio de Janeiro. The computer systems of the Brazilian Supreme Court and other state institutions (such as the National Telecommunications Agency and the Federal Police) suffered cyberattacks allegedly related to the decision to block the social network X.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Supreme Court said its systems were attacked simultaneously on August 29 and stopped working for ten minutes.

“The court’s technical team acted quickly, removing online services and implementing new layers of security, so that all access was normalized and there was no operational damage,” the statement said.

The attacks occurred on the same day that Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered the blocking of the social network X (formerly Twitter), after the platform failed to comply with an order to appoint a legal representative for Brazil.

In the last few hours, the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), the state body in charge of enforcing the court order and forcing internet operators to block access to X, has also been attacked.

According to the agency, the Supreme Court’s decision led to “an expected increase in attacks, which caused temporary instabilities in its systems and networks.”

However, the agency said the systems were quickly restored and additional measures were taken to strengthen the network infrastructure.

The Federal Police also reported cyber attacks, but said in a statement that the institution’s systems and data access were not compromised.
