Brazilian football star Marta will participate in the World Cup for the sixth time. The six-time world football player of the year was included in the selection of the ‘Seleção’ by national coach Pia Sundhage on Tuesday.
The 37-year-old Marta played her first World Cup in 2003. After that, the attacker of the American Orlando Pride was also there in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019. At the latter tournament, she broke the record of the German Miroslav Klose with her seventeenth World Cup goal.
Sundhage cannot guarantee that Marta will take action from the first whistle. “Marta is the queen, she’s an icon. Just being around her is contagious,” Sundhage said. “I don’t know yet if she will be in the starting line-up. She will play the role I give her and I am convinced that she will do well.”
Marta was named the best football player in the world in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2018. The Brazilian has played 174 international matches so far and scored 115 times.
With her country, Marta was a losing finalist at the World Cup in 2007. At the previous World Cup in 2019, Brazil stranded in the eighth finals against host country France (2-1 after extra time). Her compatriot Formiga played her seventh World Cup there, making her the record holder.
The Brazilian football players start this week with a training camp. They play another friendly against Chile before traveling to Australia for the World Cup, which starts on July 20. France, Jamaica and Panama are the opponents in the group stage.
