There is chaos in Brazilian football. The Seleção are playing poorly, only Neymar is having a good time.
Reports vary as to whether there were 3,000 or 4,000 guests on board the MSC Preziosa, as well as the costs for the rather unusual trip. The only thing that is certain is that Neymar chartered the 330 meter long cruise ship with a casino and water park from December 26th to 29th. There are said to have been 30 concerts on board. The prices for the spectacle were reportedly between 1,000 and 6,000 euros, depending on the cabin category.

“My condolences to those who weren’t there,” Neymar wrote afterwards about the party cruise under the motto “Ney(em alto)Mar” (Neymar at Sea). The spectacle off the coast of Brazil is of course a stark contrast to everything that is currently happening on land. The Seleção, for whom Neymar is currently unable to play after tearing his cruciate ligament, is bobbing in troubled waters and severe storms are hitting the association (CBF).
In fact, there is chaos in Brazilian football, primarily due to the farce surrounding Ednaldo Rodrigues. He was elected president of the CBF in 2022, but a court in Rio de Janeiro deposed him in December due to alleged irregularities. On Thursday, a judge from the Supreme Federal Court reversed everything through an interim injunction. So Rodrigues is back in office for now.
Ancelotti surprisingly extended his contract with Real Madrid
Rodrigues has not yet proven to be suitable for the position, as the search for a new national coach alone proves. Just on the day that Neymar and his party people went back ashore, Real Madrid announced that they had extended Carlo Ancelotti’s contract until 2026. For six months, Rodrigues had previously suggested that the Italian would take over the Seleção this summer and look after them at the Copa América and the 2026 World Cup.
Ancelotti should have succeeded Fernando Diniz, who, according to consistent media reports, Rodrigues fired with his first official act after returning home on Friday. Diniz was only appointed national coach in July 2023. The 49-year-old has worked double since then, his full-time job is as coach of Fluminense, with the Rio club he won the Copa Libertadores, South America’s highest crown in club football, in November. The Seleção also got off to a successful start in World Cup qualifying with a 5-1 win against Bolivia and a 1-0 win in Peru.

The initial enthusiasm about Diniz quickly faded. The victories were followed by one draw and three defeats, including the humiliating 0-1 loss to arch-rivals Argentina at the Maracanã at the end of November. Brazil is sixth in the table – which would just qualify for participation in the 2026 World Cup. Who the coach is is completely unclear. Jose Mourinho? The Portuguese has stressed in advance that he wants to concentrate on his club AS Roma.

At least Brazil’s teams are allowed to continue playing internationally for now. Thursday’s ruling in favor of President Rodrigues keeps the CBF off FIFA and the continental association CONMEBOL for the time being. Both had threatened to suspend the Brazilian teams because the judiciary had interfered in the association’s affairs. The U23 can begin qualifying for the Olympics in Paris on January 20th. (jh/sid)
