Brazilian Fluminense Clinches Historic Victory in South American Libertadores Cup

Brazilian Fluminense won the South American Libertadores Cup (equivalent to the Champions League) for the first time in its history, by defeating Argentinian Boca Juniors 2-1, on Saturday, after extra time (regular time 1-1) at the famous Maracanã Stadium in Rio. De Janeiro.

Argentine German Cano (36) and John Kennedy (99) scored the goals for Fluminense, and Peruvian Luis Advincula (72) scored the goal for Boca Juniors.

The two teams completed the match with 10 players, after Kennedy was sent off with a second yellow card after scoring the second goal, for crossing the sponsorship boards and celebrating with the fans in the stands (102), and Boca’s Colombian defender Frank Fabra, for directing a blow to captain Nino’s face (105 + 7).

Fluminense kept the title in Brazil for the fifth time in a row, a series that no other country has achieved in 64 years in this tournament.

Fluminense has previously reached the Copa Libertadores final once, losing to the Ecuadorian Liga de Quito in 2008.

Fluminense, which guaranteed participation in the Club World Cup scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia next December, deprived the Argentine team of its seventh title and equaling the record of its compatriot Independiente.

Boca has not won the continental championship since 2007, and lost the final twice in recent years, most notably to its rival River Plate in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, in 2018, noting that the return match was held at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in the Spanish capital, Madrid, due to riots between the two teams.

Boca beat another Brazilian team in the semi-finals, Palmeiras, 4-2 on penalties, after the two teams tied (0-0) in the first leg and (1-1) in the return, thanks to the brilliance of its goalkeeper, Sergio Romero, who successfully saved two penalty kicks.

Romero had saved his team in the three elimination rounds. Because he failed to resolve any of them back and forth and needed penalty kicks every time.

Romero succeeded in saving six of 11 penalty kicks against Uruguayan Nacional in the quarter-finals, Argentine Racing Club in the quarter-finals, and Palmeiras in the semi-finals, and put his team in the final.

On the other hand, Fluminense beat its compatriot Internacional 4-3 on aggregate.
