Brazilian Federation prosecuted for homophobia

As Brazil prepares to face Chile in the quarter-finals of the Copa America, the Brazilian Federation (CFB) is being prosecuted for homophobia. The association for the defense of LGBT rights has lodged a complaint against the CFB, accusing it of the lack of jersey 24 within the selection, while the number 24 is often associated with the homosexual community in Brazil.

Rio de Janeiro judge Ricardo Cyfer gave the Federation 48 hours to explain why it had not assigned the number 24 to any of the 24 Seleção players participating in the 2021 edition of the Copa America. A tournament for which the Conmebol has authorized each selection to register up to 28 players (against 23 usually).

Brazil are the only one of the ten participants in the tournament not to have a number 24 in their ranks, with Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz having inherited the number 25.

The judge urged the CBF to explain whether this decision was deliberate, to clarify who was responsible for the selection of numbers and if the authorities had guidelines on recording player numbers. According to Reuters, the CBF has so far made no comment.
