The head of Brazilian diplomacy will meet in Quito with President Guillermo Lasso, with whom he will discuss issues related to the security and integration of the countries of the Amazon basin.
The Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gustavo Manrique, will also receive Vieira and will follow up on progress on issues on the bilateral agenda, especially trade, security cooperation and the environment, indicated an official note.
Within the framework of the visit and focused on the environmental issue, the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry presented Edith Paredes as a candidate for the executive direction of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA), an organization made up of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana , Peru, Suriname and Venezuela.
Despite the ideological differences between Brasilia and Quito, President Lasso promotes bilateral relations with the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who promotes regional integration through mechanisms such as the Union of South American Nations (Unasur).
Media outlets announced that Lula invited Latin American leaders to a retreat at the end of this month to discuss the reactivation of Unasur, cooperation in health, defense, infrastructure, and the future of the countries in this geographic area.
Until now Ecuador has not ruled on the matter, while analysts and social organizations criticize the foreign policy of the current administration.
“Regional integration has not been a priority of Lasso’s servile and erratic foreign policy. Hopefully he will attend the meeting called by Lula with a sovereign position in accordance with the principles of the Constitution,” former Ecuadorian Vice Foreign Minister Fernando Yépez commented on Twitter.
