(Belga) Brazil won the Women’s Copa America on Saturday by winning 1-0 in the final against Colombia, who were playing in front of more than 20,000 of their supporters in Bucaramanga in the northeast of the country.
Debinha scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 39th minute for the Brazilians, who will have managed an impressive full card in the continental tournament with six wins in six matches, accompanied by 20 goals scored without conceding. The Canarinha thus once again asserted their overwhelming regional domination by winning their 8th Copa America in nine editions (only that of 2006 escaped them, with a defeat in the final against Argentina). The Swede Pia Sundhage, coach of Brazil for three years, adds for her part a title to her list which also includes two Olympic gold medals gleaned at the head of the United States team in 2008 and 2012. For this Copa in Colombia, experienced stars Marta (36, injury), Formiga (44, international retirement) and Cristiane (37, technical choice) were not in the Brazilian squad for the first time in 20 years. Brazil and Colombia, having reached the final, had qualified for both the 2023 World Cup, scheduled in Australia and New Zealand, and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The third qualifying ticket for the World Cup 2023 was obtained on Friday by Argentina, winner of Paraguay 3-1 in the match for 3rd place.
