A suspension bridge, located on the border between the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarinacollapsed on Monday February 20 when 100 people tried to cross it despite the warning sign of the maximum capacity of 20 people, according to the mayor’s office. This event occurred in the midst of the celebrations of the Brazilian Carnival, which was held again after years of suspension due to the pandemic.
The Torres Fire Department stated that between 15 and 20 people were treated by first responders and immediately taken to the local hospital with minor injuries. The rest made it out without difficulty, except for two people who are missing. So far, no family member has filed a complaint about the case, so the firefighters will continue to investigate.
The distressing moment on the 30-meter bridge, which linked the cities of Torres and Passo de Torres, was recorded and broadcast on social networks. The time of the collapse was around 2.20 am (local time), according to the Torres Town Hall.
According to local authorities, people were not seriously injured due to the low height and material of the bridge (ropes).
Unfortunately, it would not be the first time that bridge accidents have occurred. In 2006, the Colina Bridge collapsed, killing three people. Eight years later it happened with the bridge of the av.
