Brazil turns off Cristo Redentor lights in solidarity with Vinicius Jr. against racist chants during match

The lights of the Cristo Redentor statue, one of the world’s most prominent tourist attractions, were turned off for an entire hour at around 6pm local time, in an affirmation of the Brazilian government’s union with the footballing world to condemn racial insults aimed at Vinicius Jr During the La Liga summit this week.

And all the lights surrounding the statue were closed, in a sad scene, to express solidarity with Vinicius Junior, after he was subjected to unacceptable racist chants during the Real Madrid and Valencia match in the 35th round of La Liga.

The reserve, which manages the memorial, in collaboration with the Brazilian Football Confederation and the Observatory for Racial Discrimination in Football, carried out this unique display.

And the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Brazil condemned, on Monday, the racist attacks that Brazilian football star Vinicius Jr. was repeatedly subjected to in Spain, and called on the Spanish government and sports authorities to punish those involved.

On Monday, the Brazilian government summoned the Spanish ambassador to clarify the situation in the wake of the most recent incident on Sunday when racist insults were directed at the black striker for Real Madrid and the second in the ranking of its scorers.
