Brazil to Produce Billions of Modified Mosquitoes to Combat Dengue Outbreak.

In Brazil, the government plans to produce billions of mosquitoes that will be spread throughout the country. Far from transmitting malaria, they will rather play the role of response to the ” Dengue“. This disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and it has already affected more than one million people in 2022.

To proceed with the production of these billions of mosquitoes in Brazil, the World Mosquito Program (WMP) has announced the creation of a mosquito farm.

In this farm will be raised 5 billion mosquitoes per year. These insects will therefore be modified so as not to transmit this disease which is all the rage in the country.

“When released in places where Aedes aegypti species (disease-transmitting) mosquitoes are endemic, the modified mosquitoes breed with wild mosquitoes. Through this reproduction, they will then transmit the bacterium to their offspring, which considerably reduces the transmission of these diseases”, explains the Brazilian weekly Veja relayed by Courrier international.

As a reminder, this is not the first time that this experiment has been carried out. It was also carried out in several Asian countries in previous years. Experiments carried out and which have led to good results.

This new project will cost the Brazilian government 18 million euros. A sum that will be partly supported by the Global Mosquito Control Program.
