New host for America’s Cup 2021 has been established. Brazil has been appointed as the venue for football parties in Latin America.
“The Brazilian government is taking a good step in decision-making at a fundamental moment for South American football,” said the President CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, quoted from the official website.
The Copa America will be held from June 13 to July 10 in Argentina and Colombia. However, two weeks before the tournament started, the two of them even canceled to host the arena for different reasons.
Colombia last week was deprived of its rights due to uncertain political turmoil, following violent protests against President Ivan Duque. Argentina automatically became the sole host while the South American Football Federation (CONMEBOL) looked for a replacement for Colombia.
However, 10 days later, Argentina also withdrew as the host of the 2021 Copa America. This was due to the high number of Covid-19 cases in the country.
As of Monday (31/5) morning WIB, Argentina had the fifth highest average case rate in the world, 76 cases per 100,000 people. That equates to more than 34,000 cases per day.
Brazil has experience in hosting top-level sporting events, including the 2014 World Cup, the 2019 U-17 World Cup and the 2019 Copa America.
So far, it has not been determined which city in Brazil will host. CONMEBOL will announce it in the near future.
