Brazilian Air Force presents preliminary report
This is the result of a preliminary report presented by the Brazilian Air Force’s Aviation Accident Investigation Authority (Cenipa) in the capital Brasília on Friday. The interim report details how the accident unfolded.
11:58:05: The ATR 72 takes off with 58 passengers and four crew members on board at the Aeroporto Regional do Oeste – Coronel Adalberto Mendes da Silva in Cascavel.
12.12.40 hrs: Anti-icing system for the propellers is switched on.
12.14.56 Clock: A warning light comes on in the cockpit. It indicates the danger of icing.
12.15.03 hrs: Pilots switch on anti-icing protection.
12.15.42 hrs: Warning tone in the cockpit indicates a problem with the anti-icing system. During the next 50 minutes, the warning system switches itself off and on again.
13.15 hrs: Pilots contact the destination (São Paulo).
13:17:32: Pilots inform passengers about conditions at the destination and the planned landing time.
13:17:32: Anti-icing protection is switched on.
13:18:41: CRUISE SPEED LOW: Pilots receive a speed warning at 181 knots.
13.19.07 hrs: Anti-icing protection is switched off.
13.19.23 hrs: Pilots inform the destination that they are at the ideal point for descent, but because a second aircraft is in the area, permission is not granted.
13.20.00 hrs: Pilot says «lots of ice».
13:20:05: Anti-icing protection is switched on.
13:20:50: The aircraft begins a right turn.
13:20:57: At a speed of 169 knots, the Increase Speed warning was displayed. A warning tone sounds. Vibrations are also heard. A stall warning is given.
13:21:09: Control of the aircraft is lost. It falls uncontrollably to the ground.
