Brazil: The identification of bodies from the crashed plane has begun – 2024-08-11 10:49:48

Brazil’s civil protection teams worked through the night to recover the bodies of passengers from the wreckage of the plane, which crashed near Sao Paulo yesterday, killing all 62 people on board.

At least 21 bodies had been recovered by Saturday morning, the Sao Paulo government said, and two victims were identified at the scene. All the bodies are taken to the Sao Paulo morgue.

Yesterday, local carrier Voepass said there were 57 passengers and a crew of four on the plane, but today the company confirmed there was one more passenger, bringing the death toll to 62, all Brazilian nationals.

The locations of the bodies on the plane, their physical characteristics, documents and personal items such as cellphones are being used to identify them, firefighter Maicon Christo said from the scene of the crash.

“As soon as we gather all the evidence, we remove the victims from the wreckage to take them to Sao Paulo,” he added.

Relatives of the victims have been asked to go to Sao Paulo to help provide genetic material aimed at DNA identification of human remains, Sao Paulo government Civil Protection Coordinator Engel Pereira said.

An investigation has been launched by the Brazilian Air Accident Research and Prevention Center (Cenipa) to determine the causes of the air tragedy. The aircraft, an ATR-72 turboprop, was bound for Sao Paulo, having departed from Cascavel, in the state of Parana, and crashed around 1:30 p.m. local time (7:30 p.m. Greek time), in the municipality of Vigneto, 80 kilometers northwest of Sao Paulo.
