Protesters invaded, pillaged and set fire to a unit at the Carrefour supermarket on Rua Pamplona, in the region of Avenida Paulista, in downtown São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil, in the early evening of this Friday (20). In addition to throwing stones at the establishment, the demonstrators raised bars, stormed the store, dropped products and set fires. There is no record of injuries.
The protests, held on “Black Awareness Day”, a holiday in many cities in the country, arise the day after the death of João Freitas, a 40-year-old black citizen murdered by two security guards from another Carrefour unit in Porto Alegre.
The two attackers are under arrest and will be held responsible for qualified homicide. According to the first medical reports, the victim died of asphyxiation.
In other cities, notably Porto Alegre, there were demonstrations against racism with a record of riots. Late in the afternoon today in the northern part of the country’s northernmost capital, a group of about 50 people attempted to invade a closed Carrefour.
The Military Brigade occupied the interior of the establishment and started throwing gas bombs to remove protesters from the gate, which ended up damaged. A person managed to invade and painted the facade of the building. Others set fire to materials, according to a report on the UOL portal.
In Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasília and Santa Maria, a city in the same state, Rio Grande do Sul, in Porto Alegre, there were also demonstrations.
