Brazil: Sidewalk collapses during Christmas parade and at least 30 people fall into the river

(CNN Spanish) – Some 33 people were injured on Monday when a sidewalk on Avenida Beira Rio collapsed, throwing people into the Cachoeria River, during the inaugural presentation of the Christmas festivities, the city council of Joinville, in the north, reported in a statement. from Santa Catarina, Brazil.

The ceremony had to be interrupted for 40 minutes because of what happened.

The city council added that, in total, 21 adults and 12 children were referred to the São José Municipal Hospital and the Dr. Jeser Amarante Faria Children’s Hospital. No patient had serious injuries and the condition of all was considered stable.

Immediately after the resumption of the event, the Mayor of Joinville, Adriano Silva, began his speech thanking the professionals who worked to rescue the people who fell into the river.

“We are grateful for not having anyone in serious condition. And also for the emergency care that was provided to all the victims, ”said the mayor.
