Dengue is a viral disease that is transmitted by Aedes aegypti, a type of mosquito that breeds mainly in stagnant water, a situation that can be aggravated by the poor disposal of solid waste, where many mosquito breeding sites can appear.
MADRID, 29 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Brazilian Ministry of Health confirmed this Thursday that the South American nation has already exceeded the threshold of one million dengue cases so far this year, a figure almost five times higher than that registered in the same period last year.
According to the data collected in the Arbovirus Panel of the health portfolio, the number of dengue cases stands at 1,017 million infected. At the moment, 214 deaths have been recorded and almost 700 deaths are under investigation.
The vice president of the Brazilian Immunization Society, Renato Kfouri, has warned that the early start of the increase in cases, which are still on the rise, has drawn the attention of the authorities to the behavior of the dengue virus this year.
«In these million cases we have an unpredictability of dengue. There are years when the season starts earlier and calms down earlier. There are years when the season reaches a plateau. There are years in which there is a very large peak, but of short duration,” he said.
The states with the highest incidence are Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Paraná, Goías, Acre and Río de Janeiro, as well as the Federal District. In the case of Minas Gerais, in addition to being the second state with the highest incidence, it is also the one with the most cases, with more than 352,000.
In the first weeks of last year, Brazilian health authorities recorded a total of 207,000 cases of dengue and less than 150 deaths.
