Brasilia. Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro is coming under increasing pressure due to the disastrous pandemic situation in the country. Last Friday, Deputy Attorney General Lucas Rocha Furtado filed an application with the Federal Audit Office (TCU). Bolsonaro should therefore no longer make any further decisions regarding how to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.
The basis of the application is Article 44 of the TCU. According to this, at the request of the Attorney General, the responsible person can be temporarily removed from his position. For the judicial decision, there must be sufficient evidence that further damage will occur if this person continues to exercise his or her function.
Furtado also suggests that Vice President Hamilton Mourão should assume the leading role in pandemic management. In addition, according to Furtado, the health minister, the head of cabinet and the finance minister as well as other responsible persons who are responsible for the current situation should be removed from their offices.
It’s not the first time a prosecutor has tried to sue Bolsonaro for his handling of the pandemic. The Public Prosecutor’s Office (PGR) had already initiated several investigations against him in February (amerika21 reported).
Since the situation in the country has continued to deteriorate, the number of deaths per day has reached up to 3,000 and the health system is on the verge of collapse, Bolsonaro’s support among the population has also declined. A survey by Datafolha shows that 56 percent of the population consider him to be an incompetent manager.
There has been a surge in impeachment motions sent to the Chamber of Deputies over the past year. By the beginning of March there were already 74.
