Brazil: Mother locks up children and goes to party

Three small children are burned alive

In the Brazilian state of Acre, three young children are burned alive in their home. The neighbors could still hear their screams, but couldn’t save them. The mother locked her eight month old baby at home with his two older brothers (4,2) and went to a bar. For the 23-year-old, the evening ended in prison.

Diogo, Caio and Vitoria Sofia stayed home alone – included!

It was Saturday and Jociane M. wanted to have fun, party and get drunk. The 23-year-old from Rio Branco left her children Diogo, Caio and Vitoria Sofia unattended at home and secured the door with a chain and a padlock. Apparently she wanted to make sure that no one entered the hut while she was away. But in this way she also prevented help from reaching her children. Because while Jociane M. was partying, a fire suddenly broke out in the small wooden hut.

The fire brigade assumes that a short circuit in a fan could be the cause, reported the Brazilian broadcaster “Globo”. Further investigations are still pending. The flames spread rapidly. The children were trapped: their only escape route was closed.

Wooden hut burned down completely

When the fire brigade arrived on site, the 12 square meter wooden dwelling had already been completely in flames, explains “Globo”. The only thing the emergency services could have done then was to prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding houses.

The mother now has to answer for neglect

The children could only be rescued dead from the completely destroyed house. On pictures of the accident site you can see that there are remains of charred clothing lying around everywhere. Charred wooden beams and burnt furniture remnants pile up on top of each other. The mother was arrested. She has since been released after a hearing. They are now awaiting a neglect trial.
