Ednaldo Rodriguez, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, was removed from his position, following a court decision that invalidated an agreement that allowed his election.
The dismissal of Roderich is considered an additional blow to Brazilian football and the “Seleção” team, which is going through a difficult period in terms of results, with the injury of its star Neymar, and his exposure to three consecutive defeats in the qualifiers for the “World Cup 2026.”
The Special Law Chamber of the Court of Justice in Rio de Janeiro explained in a statement, “The body will have to hold new elections within 30 days, and until then, the President of the Supreme Court of Justice will be responsible for managing the Brazilian Football Confederation.”
This court invalidated an agreement between the Brazilian Federation and the Rio Public Prosecutor’s Office, dating back to March 2022, which later allowed Rodriguez to be elected as head of the federation until 2026, and the Brazilian Federation is appealing, according to Brazilian media.
In a letter sent to the Brazilian Federation, FIFA warned that its members would be “subject to sanctions” if their internal affairs were exposed to external interference.
One of the consequences could be the exclusion of Brazil, the five-time world champion, from international competitions, such as the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia “from December 12 to 22,” in which Fluminense, the Copa Libertadores champion, is participating.
The dismissal of Rodriguez, the first black president of the Brazilian Federation, could affect the arrival of Italian Carlo Ancelotti scheduled for next June to coach Brazil.
Rodriguez was at the head of the negotiations that, according to the Continental Confederation, resulted in an agreement with the current coach of Real Madrid to take over the reins of coaching the Seleção at the end of the European season.
Brazil, led by interim coach Fernando Diniz (49 years old), presented a series of disappointing performances over the past two months, during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where it tied with Venezuela 1-1, and lost to Uruguay 0-2, Colombia 1-2, and Argentina 0-1.
