São Paulo (EFE).- The Butantan Institute in São Paulo, one of the most important scientific centers in Brazil, announced that it has suspended the development of its vaccine against covid 19, after failing to achieve the expected results in phase 2 clinical trials in humans.
“The result did not show the expected immunity. Therefore, we have stopped its development and continue to develop more promising routes,” said Esper Kallás, director of the Butantan Institute, which is the largest producer of vaccines and serums in Latin America. in a note.
The group, linked to the Government of the state of São Paulo, explained that in phase 2 tests, in which 400 volunteers participated, called ‘Butanvac’ “doubled the amount of antibodies against the disease after 28 days to apply. “
The ‘Butanvac’ against Covid-19 did not get the results
However, it fell well short of the goal set for that phase of the studies, which is to produce quadruple antibodies to match the existing anti-Covid-19 vaccines. already available to the people in Brazil.
However, “he will not order the development” of the possible vaccine by not complying with the agreement with the Brazilian health authorities through which it was agreed that the new formula “should not be be lower” than those already used by public health. system.
The one called ‘Butanvac’ was aimed at a vaccine against the flu and the coronavirus, and obtained “promising results” in animal tests published in March 2022.
Even before these tests, in April 2021, still in the pandemic, the Butantan Institute began to produce the first batch of one million doses of the mentioned experimental formula, also intended for analysis done on the Brazilian health agency.
But in the end it did not reach the goals set for phase 2 clinical trials.
Institution of justification
“The clinical trial has fulfilled its role. At Butantan we have full respect for the scientific process and results. That’s why the public can believe us: when we say that a vaccine is good, it’s because studies have shown it,” said Kallás.
The laboratory developed the serum using the same method used to produce the flu vaccine and uses chicken eggs as an input for its production.
Brazil was one of the hardest hit countries in the world by the coronavirus pandemic, which as of 2020 has claimed approximately 713,000 deaths in the country.
