Brazilian Amazon, on red alert

The pandemic is at its highest peak in the entire Brazilian Amazon region, affecting mainly the states of Amazonas, Pará, Roraima and Tocantins, where public health systems are collapsing.

To face the situation, especially in the state of Amazonas, the most affected by the virus, the Ministry of Health announced a series of actions to strengthen the public health system in its capital, Manaus.

Among them are the reorganization of health posts, the hiring of more personnel and the opening of new Intensive Therapy Units (ICU).
According to the ministry, the hiring of about 200 doctors and 300 nurses has already begun and 78 more respirators will be sent to Manaus, where 178 new ICUs are also expected to open.

“It will be a difficult AO”

Despite the fact that the Ministry of Health has denied that the country is facing a second wave of the pandemic, several Governments regional governments have been admitting it since the pandemic worsened in Brazil.

Such is the case of the governor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, who requested this Wednesday the collaboration of all mayors to face the new wave of covid that is hitting the country.

Sao Paulo, with more than 46 million population, is the most populated region in Brazil and the main epicenter of the pandemic in the country with about 1.5 million cases and about 48,000 deaths, of which 289 occurred in the last 24 hours.

Doria accepted this Wednesday that the country entered a second peak of the pandemic and pointed out that that is why 2021 will be “a difficult year.”

“The compassion of mayors and government officials must be a priority. We will have a difficult year, much more difficult than we imagined until last October. But it will pass, if we have the ability to act with the principle of defending life,” he said during a virtual meeting held with the mayors of the state of São Paulo.
