Three days of national mourning have been declared in Brazil following the crash of the twin-engine Voepass ATR-72, which was flying from Cascavel in the state of Paraná to Guarulhos Airport in Sao Paulo. All 61 on board are dead (57 passengers and 4 crew members) and three days of mourning were declared in the country.
A report from the Globo television network’s weather center said “the possibility of ice formation in the Vigneto area has been confirmed,” and local media cited analysts pointing to ice as a possible cause of the crash, according to ABC.
However, aviation expert Lito Sousa warned that meteorological conditions alone are not enough to explain why the plane went down as it did.
“Analyzing a plane crash with images alone can lead to wrong conclusions about the causes. But we can see an airplane with a loss of support, no horizontal speed. In that flat-spin situation, there’s no way to regain control of the plane,” he told the AP.

Body identification begins
The black box has been located and is expected to be analyzed. Authorities began taking the bodies to the morgue on Friday and called on family members of the victims to bring X-rays, dental or other medical tests to help identify the bodies.
Since the beginning of the year in Brazil, 108 air accidents and crashes have been recorded with a total of 49 deaths. In the last ten years, 746 human lives were lost in 1,665 accidents and mishaps in the Latin American country.
