Brazil has overtaken India in second place in the number of reported cases of coronavirus – Latin America

The Brazilian Ministry of Health announced yesterday about over 85 thousand new infected in one day. Thus, the total number of confirmed cases in the country with a population of about 212 million people exceeded 11.363 million.

In India, with more than 1.3 billion inhabitants, there are 11.333 million reported cases.

With more than 275,000 deaths from the new coronavirus, COVID-19, Brazil ranks second in the world in deaths. In both statistics, the country is ahead only of the United States.

Brazil has been hit hard by the coronavirus, and the situation has been particularly dramatic recently, with several improved records of deaths in a single day. The health care system has failed in several cities, including Manaus, the capital of the northern state of Amazonas.

To the south, in the affluent state of Sao Paulo, COVID-19 hospital beds are fully occupied in 53 cities. At least 45 patients died while waiting for a place in the intensive care unit.

A state of emergency will take effect in Sao Paulo on Monday at 8pm. However, authorities in the coastal metropolis of Rio de Janeiro continue to ease the restrictive measures.

President Jair Bolsonaro, who has repeatedly downplayed the seriousness of the pandemic and recently questioned the importance of vaccines, is opposed to the restrictions because they harm the economy, the DPA reported.
