Brazil: Forest fires affect 30 cities and leave 2 dead

São Paulo. Brazil’s Sao Paulo state reported late Friday that 30 of its cities were affected or surrounded by wildfires, and that two people trying to contain the flames at an industrial plant had died.

Cities have been affected by dry and hot weather in recent days, the government said in a statement.

The state government also warned that wildfires could spread rapidly due to gusty winds and ravage large areas of natural vegetation.

The government has not yet reported that the flames have directly reached the city of Sao Paulo, the largest in Latin America by population, with more than 11 million inhabitants.

However, local media reported that smoke was covering parts of the sky over the state capital.

The government said two employees of an industrial plant in the town of Urupes had died on Friday while fighting a fire, without giving further details.

The Sao Paulo state government has set up an emergency committee to deal with the fires, which have also partially or completely blocked some 15 roads.

The wildfire season in Brazil typically peaks in August and September.
