Brazil: extradition of Bolsonaro supporters who fled to Argentina ordered

The judge of the Supreme Court of Brazil Alexandre de Moraes ordered this Tuesday the extradition of those investigated for the violent episodes that occurred on January 8, 2023 in the Plaza de los Tres Poderes, when supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro committed acts of vandalism in rejection to the electoral victory of Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva.

The announced measure affects 60 Brazilians who fled to Argentina – after destroying their electronic anklets – and one who escaped to Spain, the blogger Oswaldo Eustáquio. The complete decisions are under judicial secrecy and the details have not been revealed, Agencia Brasil reports.

The requests were made by the Federal Police and, after authorization, the process will reach the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who will be responsible for carrying out the international procedures for each case.

The Supreme Court has already sentenced more than 200 people involved in the assault on the headquarters of the Brazilian Congress, after Lula’s inauguration, for crimes of armed association, qualified damages, deterioration of property, violent abolition of the rule of law and attempted coup of State.
