Rio de Janeiro, Apr 10 (EFE) .- Brazil registered 2,616 deaths in the last 24 hours, which already adds 351,334 victims since it was notified, in March of last year, the first death in the country from the coronavirus, reported this Saturday the Government.
According to the most recent balance of the Ministry of Health, the South American giant passed 13.4 million infections this Saturday by adding 71,832 new cases in the last day.
The death toll registered this Saturday is well below that of the day before (3,695) and practically half of the daily record of deaths in the country (4,249) reached on Thursday, something that the Ministry has justified by the reduction of the registry staff during the weekends.
Brazil, with its more than 210 million inhabitants, is going through the worst phase of the pandemic since the coronavirus arrived in the country, just over a year ago, and continues as the second nation in the world with the highest number of deaths and infections due to it. virus.
In the last week it registered two new death records, both with more than 4,000 victims, the highest daily death rate from covid-19 on the planet, currently.
Despite the figures, some regions of the country such as Rio de Janeiro, relaxed the restrictive measures the day before and this is the first weekend, after ten days closed, in which bars, restaurants, shops and tourist sites reopened their doors to the public.
However, in places where crowds are promoted, such as beaches and parks, access is restricted, rules that were not respected by several Cariocas this Saturday who chose to sunbathe on the sands of the iconic Ipanema and Copacabana.
The mayor of the city, Eduardo Paes, trusts the common sense of the Cariocas and this Saturday he again called for them to respect the rules, wear masks and maintain minimum distances to avoid the spread of the virus. However, he warned that if the numbers of deaths and infections rise again, the restrictions will return.
Experts assure that the serious situation of the pandemic in Brazil will impact in the short term the health systems of Brasilia, Mato Grosso, Santa Catarina, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul and Rio Grande do Sul, some of which are already collapsed and others on the brink of crisis.
According to a study by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), the largest medical research center in Latin America, the next few days will be reflected in the hospitals and Intensive Care Units the high rates of infections and mortality that they suffered, between the end of March and early April, these regions.
The delay in vaccination, which is still a process that is being carried out slowly in Brazil, heralds a still dark outlook for the South American power.
According to the Health portfolio, more than 45 million immunizers have already been distributed throughout the country and more than 25 million people have received doses of any of the covid-19 vaccines.
Of this total, some 19.8 million people – 9.4% of the country’s population – received the first dose and another 5.5 million – 2.6% of the total population in Brazil – already received the second.
