Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Brazil recorded a high daily spike in Covid on Wednesday (23/6), 115,228 new cases. That is the highest record in the country since the global pandemic due to the transmission of the corona virus occurred since late 2019.
“With this continuing acceleration in the number of cases, we are already in the third wave [Covid-19],” said Brazil’s top Secretary of the National Health Council (Conass), Carlos Lula, told local media Or Balloon as quoted from AFP, Thursday (24/6).
With the addition of the positive number, the total cumulative number of corona exposures in the country has reached more than 18 million cases.
At the same day’s record, there were 2,392 new Covid deaths. Thus, the total number of deaths due to Covid in the country is 507,109 people.
Brazil is the second country in the world to have the highest number of Covid-19 deaths, behind the United States, which has recorded more than 600,000 deaths.
The number of daily infections in Brazil has continued to rise more than a month ago, and the average daily death toll has been around 2,000 since last week.
Last weekend, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was protested following the death toll of a Covid-19 patient that reached 500,000 as of Saturday (19/6). They are disappointed with Bolsonaro’s policies in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic. Hundreds of people took to the streets in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Salvador, to Recife.
“In June last year, we reached 50 thousand deaths due to Covid-19. In just one year, we have doubled this figure 10 times. This is very scary,” said Brazilian neurologist Miguel Nicolelis, quoted from CNN.
