Brazil confirms first death linked to monkeypox

Brazil (ANTARA) – Brazil on Friday (29/7) confirmed the country’s first death related to monkeypox, according to Brazil’s Ministry of Health.

The case of death was reported in Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil. The victim was a 41-year-old man who was undergoing treatment for other serious clinical conditions, including cancer, and his health deteriorated after becoming infected, the ministry said.

The man, whose name was not given, is being treated at a public hospital in Belo Horizonte.

He was in septic shock made worse by monkeypox.

In Minas Gerais, the state health authority said there were 44 confirmed cases of monkeypox and 130 suspected cases under investigation.

As of Wednesday (27/7), Brazil recorded 978 confirmed cases of monkeypox.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the current outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (public health emergency of international concern).

Experts classify monkeypox as a rare viral disease that causes lesions on the skin and is transmitted through close contact with an infected person, including through hugging, kissing, massage, or intimate contact.

In addition, it is transmitted through respiratory secretions or contact with clothing, towels, or other items used by an infected person.
