Brazil: Bolsonaro “actively” involved in attempted coup

The former head of state (2019-2022) was also “fully aware” of an alleged plot to assassinate his left-wing successor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, according to the more than 800-page report that includes the indictment of Bolsonaro and 36 others, mostly military, demands.

“The evidence collected during the investigation clearly shows that then-President Jair Messias Bolsonaro planned, carried out and had direct and actual knowledge of the actions of the criminal organization with the aim of a coup and the elimination of the democratic rule of law,” the document says .

According to investigators, the coup plan “failed” due to a lack of support from key Brazilian army commanders. The Supreme Court forwarded the report to Attorney General Paulo Gonet. He will decide whether to formally file charges against Bolsonaro and put him on trial or whether to stop the investigation.

Operation “Green-Yellow Dagger”

The 69-year-old Bolsonaro has always maintained his innocence and repeatedly described himself as a victim of “political persecution.” “The term coup has never been part of my vocabulary,” he said at a news conference on Monday. “Let’s say I did something crazy like that. What would Brazil look like the next day? The world would put up barriers against us, it would be hell. Nobody wants that.”

Last week, in a police operation related to this extensive investigation, four soldiers and a police officer were arrested on suspicion of masterminding Operation Green and Yellow Dagger. It aimed to assassinate Lula, his elected vice president Geraldo Alckmin and Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes.

Several institutions stormed

On January 8, 2023, supporters of the ex-military Bolsonaro, who did not want to recognize Lula’s election victory, stormed Congress, the seat of government and the Supreme Court in Brasilia and caused considerable damage.

A whole series of proceedings are underway against Bolsonaro. The police also accuse him of illegally selling jewelry and luxury watches, which he received as official gifts in Saudi Arabia during his time in office, for his own benefit. Bolsonaro always rejected the allegations. According to investigators, he also had vaccination certificates forged for himself, family members and employees during the pandemic. He is barred from holding public office until 2030.
