The Federal Police of Brazil sued the former Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaron, for allegedly preparing a coup d’état against the current president Lula Da Silva to overthrow him from the Executive power, with whom he lost in the presidential elections in 2022, this Thursday, December 21 November.

The institution accused 37 individuals, including several high-ranking military officers, for the crimes of “violent overthrow of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état and criminal association,” as reported in a statement. Bolsonaro, who was president of Brazil between 2019 and 2022, is among those involved, along with some generals, former ministers and former advisors to his administration.

On the list are: Walter Braga Netto, retired Army general and former Minister of the Presidency and Defense, as well as Bolsonaro’s vice presidential candidate in 2022; and Almir Garnier Santos, former Navy commander.

The investigation revealed the existence of a conspiracy that operated “in a coordinated manner” after the 2022 elections, with the aim of “try to maintain” Bolsonaro in power.

This same week, Brazilian authorities arrested four soldiers and a Federal Police agent, accused of planning an attack on the life of Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and the judge of the Supreme Federal Court, Alexandre de Moraes, in charge of the case. .

According to the investigation, the objective was to assassinate Lula and Alckmin, and form a “crisis committee” made up of military members sympathetic to Bolsonaro. Among the alternatives considered to carry out the crime was the poisoning of elected leaders. One of those arrested in this operation was retired general Mario Fernandes, who also appears on the list of accused released this Thursday by the Police.

The final report of the Federal Police, which exceeds 700 pages, was sent to the Supreme Court, which is supervising the case. It details how those involved organized themselves into different groups to carry out the coup, with tasks ranging from the dissemination of falsehoods and incitement to the military, to the search for legal strategies, the implementation of coup plans and even the collection of intelligence.

Brazil’s attorney general, Paulo Gonet, will be in charge of reviewing the police report and deciding whether to file a formal complaint with the Supreme Court against those investigated.

Lula won the October 2022 elections by a narrow margin against the far-right leader, who never acknowledged defeat. Since then, several serious incidents have broken out to try to prevent his inauguration, which finally took place on January 1, 2023.

Among the most notable episodes were roadblocks by truckers, camps in front of barracks calling for “military intervention” and violent riots in Brasilia, including an attempted bombing of a tanker truck near the city’s airport.

The climax occurred on January 8, 2023, a week after Lula’s inauguration, when thousands of far-right activists invaded and destroyed the headquarters of the Supreme Court, Congress and the Presidency, with the intention of inciting the military to take to the streets and overthrow the new president.

During that year, Bolsonaro and his close circle were the subject of several police operations. In one of them, a draft of a presidential decree was discovered that attempted to annul the results of the 2022 elections and intervene in the Superior Electoral Tribunal, the body in charge of organizing the elections.

Bolsonaro has always denied the accusations and has declared himself the victim of judicial persecution.
