Nantes. Without legendary striker Marta, who is suspended, Brazil produced one of the biggest surprises of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Saturday by eliminating host France after beating them 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the women’s soccer tournament.
The ‘Canarinha’ advanced to their sixth Olympic semi-final by taking advantage of a defensive error by the ‘Bleues’, who were more incisive throughout the match at the La Beaujoire stadium in Nantes.
Striker Gabi Portilho silenced the Nantes stadium, dressed in blue, white and red, when she finished with class in a one-on-one with goalkeeper Constance Picaud in the 82nd minute.
Meanwhile, Rio 2016 champions Germany beat defending Olympic champions Canada 4-2 on penalties after regular time and extra time ended in a goalless draw in Marseille.
With these results, the semi-finals of Olympic women’s football have been completed, with Spain and Brazil set to meet on Tuesday in Marseille, while the United States and Germany will clash that same day in Lyon.
The grand final will take place on August 10 at the Parc des Princes, home of Paris Saint-Germain.
