The record world champion is lagging behind in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA. With only seven points from six games and the recent defeat in the prestigious duel with world champion Argentina (0-1), the Selecao is in a low place.
But it’s not just sport that isn’t going well for Brazil, which also has to do without superstar Neymar at the Copa America. The house blessing is also going wrong at the association level. In addition to the disciplinary proceedings following the riots at the Argentina game, FIFA has now also reported that Ednaldo Rodrigues, as president of the national association CBF, was removed from office by a civil court.
After the dismissal of Rodrigues, the world football association of the national umbrella organization CBF banned further interventions in the management structure in a letter on December 24th and threatened with immediate suspension of the Brazilian national team and domestic clubs from all competitions in the event of a violation.
FIFA will deal with the leadership crisis together with representatives of the continental association CONMEBOL on site in the second week of January and get an idea of the leadership crisis.
Rodrigues was deposed by the civil court for alleged irregularities in his election in March 2022 – interference by state bodies in the affairs of its member associations, which is not permitted by FIFA.

FIFA also addressed the letter to the deposed CBF general secretary Alcino Reis, but not to Jose Perdiz, who was appointed by the court as an interim solution and is supposed to prepare new elections as interim president. However, Perdiz must refrain from doing this, at least until the committee made up of FIFA and CONMEBOL representatives has checked the situation on site.
