The Guatemalan Prosecutor’s Office alleges alleged administrative irregularities, as well as the indication that the suspension of the immunities of the elected president, Bernardo Arévalo de León, will be requested.
“Remembering that the recent announcement adds to other arbitrary acts committed since the electoral period, the Brazilian Government considers that the declarations and measures announced obstruct the democratic process in Guatemala”said the Foreign Ministry.
According to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this set of acts “threatens the exercise of the mandates of the legitimately elected authorities.”
Thus, the Brazilian Government “urges Guatemala to adhere to the commitments assumed within the framework of the OAS, in particular to its Democratic Charter.”
“To avoid irreparable damage to the transition process, Brazil urges the Guatemalan Executive, Legislative and Judicial powers to act with due urgency and firmness, in strict compliance with their responsibilities and powers,” he added.
According to Brazil, this urgent action will allow “stopping excesses, preserving the rights and guarantees of the citizens of that country and enforcing the sovereign decisions of Guatemalan voters.”
The Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office) of Guatemala assured this Friday that the elections won this year by Arévalo de León are not valid due to alleged administrative irregularities of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal.
