Brasilia, 26 Jan. The Brazilian Ministry of Health announced this Thursday a new immunization campaign against covid-19, in which bivalent vaccines will be applied, which offer greater protection against the most recent variants of the virus.
The campaign will begin on February 27 and, according to a calendar released this Thursday, it will begin serving those over 70 years of age, those who live in nursing homes, indigenous people and all those who suffer from some type of immunosuppression.
Then it will continue with the population between 60 and 69 years old, pregnant women and health professionals.
The Ministry of Health also announced the start of a vast information campaign on the need for vaccination, which was denied and even fought against during the administration of former President Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right leader who was succeeded by the progressive Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the charge on January 1st.
This campaign will be aimed especially at people who have not completed the vaccination schedule, since it has been verified that less than 50% of the 210 million Brazilians have the three doses of the vaccine that, according to the Ministry of Health is what guarantees the “minimum required” levels of protection.
Brazil is one of the countries most affected in the world by the pandemic, which according to the latest official data, since its outbreak in March 2020, has caused some 697,000 deaths, out of a total of 36.7 million infections. EFE
