Brazil Accused of Using Expired Corona Vaccine, What Does the Government Say?

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A number of Brazilian city governments deny allegations of using Corona vaccine from an expired AstraZeneca. The denial came after local media previously stated that cities in Brazil were using 26,000 AstraZeneca vaccines that had expired.

Corona Vaccination in Brazil has drawn criticism. The government is considered slow and there is a corruption scandal in the procurement of vaccines.

Vaccine doses that have expired are also considered less effective. In Africa, a number of countries have experienced the same thing. By May, Malawi had destroyed nearly 20,000 doses of the vaccine that had expired.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has refused to be vaccinated. He even doubts that vaccines can eradicate the Corona pandemic which has killed 500,000 people in Brazil.

According to the media Folha de S. Paulo, the expired vaccine came from a batch imported from India by the public Fiocruz biomedical institute through the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Neither the Ministry of Health nor the PAHO has commented on this expired vaccine. AstraZeneca is one of the vaccines used in Brazil in addition to China’s CoronaVac.
