Brazil: 57 dead from the floods – Half a million affected (Videos) – 2024-05-07 09:59:57

Nearly 70,000 people have been forced from their homes and more than a million households are without water due to devastating floods in southern Brazil, authorities said Saturday.

According to the Civil Protection, half a million citizens are directly “affected” by the floods in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

The latest tally released by the authorities earlier yesterday put the death toll at 57, while another 67 civilians are considered missing. In addition, at least two people were killed due to an explosion at a gas station in Porto Alegre, a city that is being hit hard by the floods, an AFP journalist found.

The situation is “dramatic” and “unprecedented,” state governor Eduardo Leite said yesterday. The floods affected 300 municipalities, several of which were cut off from the rest of the world as roads were cut off by floods and landslides.

The heavy rains are expected to continue until at least today, forecasters warn.
