MIIT VR ChinaGWM’s Punk Cat: An obvious copy of the VW Beetle
–
The Chinese car manufacturer Great Wall Motor (GWM) is bringing out two models under its electric vehicle brand ORA that look more than just similar to the VW Beetle. The Ballet Cat and the Punk Cat are bold clones of the cult car, which VW shouldn’t like.
As reported by EFAHRER.com last year, ORA, the electric car brand of China’s Great Wall Motor, unveiled its Punk Cat at the Auto Shanghai 2021 motor show. At first glance, you can already see which car served as a model for the Chinese car manufacturer: the Punk Cat is a very obvious clone of the cult car from VW. Shortly after the auto show, ORA introduced a second Beetle variant, the Ballet Cat, which differs from the Punk Cat model in its smaller size. The production of the Ballet Cat is in full swing and the first deliveries to Chinese car dealerships are already taking place Car News China reported. And the Punk Cat shouldn’t be long in coming either, because its series production has just been approved.

Great Wall has its design protected by patents, VW is examining patent infringement
The Chinese carmaker has patented the design of its Punk Cat in two versions, not only in China but also in Europe. A courageous step by GWM, because the proximity to the cult car from VW cannot be denied. Reported last year Autobildthat the car manufacturer from Wolfsburg is examining the possibility of a lawsuit against GWM and is considering legal action due to a design and patent infringement. However, it is unclear what the status of this topic is at the moment. Compared to similar lawsuits from the past, the chances of success of such lawsuits are considered to be low.

Punk Cat is a four-door with an electric motor
It is therefore not possible to deny which model served as a model for the car manufacturers from the big middle. The spherical shape, its oval taillights and even the filigree steering wheel all point to the design of the cult Beetle. However, there is also a serious difference: the Punk Cat is significantly longer than the VW model and has become a four-door. Further information on the technology of electric cars has now also become known. According to Car NewsChina, the Punk Cat is powered by an electric motor with a peak output of 200 kW and 299 hp. The LFP battery comes from CATL, but it is not yet known which specifications it will bring with it. With its little sister, the Ballet Cat model, ORA offers a total of three battery packs: 60.5 kWh for a CLTC range of 500 kilometers, 49.93 kWh (401 km CLTC) and 47.78 kWh (380 km CLTC).

Will VW follow suit with its own electric Beetle?
At VW there have been rumors for a long time about an electric remake of its famous classic car. So far, however, there has not been more than one rendering study called ID.Beetle from the car manufacturer. Only recently, CEO Herbert Diess fueled the rumor mill when he spoke on Reddit during a question and answer session. He commented on the subject that there was at least the possibility of bringing an electrified version of the VW Beetle onto the market. So far there has been no concrete statement. Fans can be excited to see if there will be an official electric Beetle from Volkswagen. So while VW is still deliberating, one thing is certain: the competition from China is not sleeping.
