Salvadoran basketball player Brayan García, who plays as a power forward for Salvadoreños, made history by becoming the first national athlete to achieve a triple-double in the 2024 Apertura Tournament Copa Tigo Sports of the Major Basketball League (LMB) by performing 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the game against Santiagueño.
García, who also belongs to the senior basketball team, achieved the feat on Sunday, April 7, when the capital team beat the Santiago de María team 79-70 on the court of the Inclusive Sports City (CDI). The player confessed that he had not realized what he had achieved and that it was his teammate, Erick Larreynaga, who told him the news at the end of the game.
“I am very happy to achieve this triple-double, it is something I have achieved for the first time in my career. It is a source of pride and gives me more encouragement to continue working hard and achieve more recognition in my sports career. I thank my teammate Erick for telling me, since he had not realized it because he was very focused on winning the duel against Santiagueño with my team,” the athlete shared.
The national, 1.94 meters tall, is originally from Sensuntepeque, Cabañas, and has been part of the Major League since he was 19 years old. He debuted in the 2016 Clausura Tournament with Cojute and, from there, he has stood out in national basketball with a record that includes two champion titles: the first with Santa Tecla BC (Clausura 2021) and the second with Águila (Clausura 2022).
“Since my beginnings in the LMB in 2019, I committed to giving all my effort on the court. Thanks to God, the support of my coaches and my family, as well as the effort and sacrifice I have made throughout this time, have allowed me to stand out in Salvadoran basketball and have the joy of lifting two trophies in the LMB. And also being part of the senior basketball team,” he said.
In the current tournament, García has very promising numbers. His effective basket percentage is 49.6% and he accumulates 155 points in nine games played, 56.99% of the total points (272) that he achieved in the previous tournament (Clausura 2023) with San Salvador in 19 games.
Additionally, the Salvadoreños power forward has accumulated 38 assists, 112 rebounds, 19 recoveries and 14 blocks so far this season. These figures place him in the top 5 in two individual categories: efficiency and assists; On both lists he is ranked fifth.
Regarding their commitment to Salvadoreños, Brayan and his teammate, Emanuel Rodríguez, took on the challenge of supporting the development of the players who come from the U-21 League and who are mostly those who make up the capital team in the Apertura 2024 Tournament, which is in third position with 16 points.
“We, with Manu, have talked that we have many offers in other teams, but we decided to take this new challenge with the boys to motivate them and for them to feel the difference from playing an under-21 league to a major league and to continue developing and then continue in the national team,” he commented.
