In the United States, Buffalo and New York are both in the same state, but 600 km separate respectively the one at the heart of the “blizzard of the century” and the largest city in the country. This is the distance between Brest and Paris. On vacation in New York, the young Breton Louise Berrou tells how she braves the cold.
“I am a student in L3 psycho. It’s an exchange year, I went to Canada in August, to Gatineau, Quebec (which faces Ottawa, Ontario). For the Christmas holidays, I had planned to go on vacation to Vancouver (British Columbia), but our flight was canceled at the last minute due to weather conditions. So I decided to go to New York. The storm was predicted for December 22, so I flew out at 6am hoping the disturbances wouldn’t arrive until later in the day. The flight was 7 hours late, I was hot, but it went anyway! I arrived in New York on the evening of December 22.
No snow in New York
I was lucky, I have a friend who got stuck in Toronto. On December 23 and 24, it was very cold, with temperatures feeling between -18°C and -20°C, but the weather in New York was nothing like the images seen elsewhere in the UNITED STATES. It didn’t even snow! Friends back in Canada had mountains of snow. In New York, it was very cold, it was quite windy, it froze and we saw stalactites in Central Park, but nothing more.
Well equipped to brave the cold
The first two days, we mainly went to museums because it was unpleasant to stay outside too long, but not unbearable either. I’m not chilly, but above all well equipped, with good socks, good gloves, a good coat… and leggings under the jeans anyway! And then I may have had time to get used to the very low temperatures as I have been in Canada for a few months, even if -20°C is still unusual. In the end, the temperatures rose on Monday (December 26). We go out a lot more, it’s 3°C, it feels hot! (laughs)”
