Brave East Frisians are looking for their world champion in pull stick jumping

The world champion in pullstock jumping was sought in East Friesland on Sunday. The courageous men jumped over a moat with a staff.

Bunde – A three to four meter long, stable stick, plus momentum, strength and a good deal of courage – that’s all it takes to get into Ostfriesland meter-wide moats to overcome.

What was once a practical means of getting from one meadow to the next with dry feet is now a cult sport in north-west Lower Saxony.

At the traditional Pentecost market in Ditzumerverlaat in Rheiderland (Leer district), particularly sporty East Frisians proved their skills at the world championship in so-called pull stick jumping on Sunday.

In bright sunshine, the eight participants heaved themselves from the ski jump over the water hole. The entire field of participants actually managed to keep their feet dry.

The title was secured by an East Frisian who was particularly ready to jump with a jump of 4.83 meters. The spectacle was attended by several hundred spectators.

The low-lying East Friesland is crisscrossed with numerous drainage ditches. The pullstock, also known as a pultstock or paddstock, used to be a suitable means of crossing chimneys, ditches and smaller canals.

The technique was also widespread in the Netherlands. To do this, the stick is placed in the ditch, momentum is gained and the stick is used to jump over the water.

Today, pullstock jumping is kept alive primarily by local clubs – also as a sporting competition.
