Thousands of people are expected to attend the Magnifest from September 6th to 8th. There will be three days of wild celebrations in the Magniviertel. Just as it was supposed to be in Solingen – until an assassin cold-bloodedly attacked the visitors with a knife. The unbelievable act has not left Braunschweig unscathed either. “The attack in Solingen has shocked and affected us too,” police spokesman Lars Dehnert told News38.

The most important thing first: “At this point in time, there are no concrete indications of events that could endanger the security of the Magnifest,” said Dehnert. When something bad like this happens, it is always directly included in the risk assessments. “Taking these results into account, the police’s security and operational concepts are then adapted to the extent necessary,” said the spokesman. Logically, he could not provide any information in advance about what exactly the police are planning and how they will specifically secure the Magnifest. However, appropriate measures would be agreed with the organizer and the city of Braunschweig to create a safe event space for everyone.

When asked, the city of Braunschweig said that it did not yet have the final security concept for the upcoming Magnifest. The parties involved were still in talks. However, it would be developed on the basis of the proven security concept from 2023, said a spokesman. Details were not public. However, as in previous years, mobile and stationary barriers played a role again. The spokesman also made it clear that carrying weapons at folk festivals and markets is prohibited by law.
Lower Saxony is examining security concepts
The state of Lower Saxony is reviewing the security concepts for major events following the fatal knife attack in Solingen. The police are “highly sensitized” and are taking security measures for major events based on their own assessment of the situation, taking into account the findings at federal level, Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) told the German Press Agency.
“This includes, in particular, examining the possibility of increasing the presence at well-attended events,” said the minister. “Unfortunately, however, we must be aware that it is very difficult for the security authorities to detect such attacks by lone perpetrators in advance.”
