## Czech Underdogs Shock Spanish Giants in Historic Victory
Mladá Boleslav, a Czech Republic soccer club, stunned the European football world with a breathtaking 2-1 victory over Spanish powerhouse Real Betis. This monumental win marks the first time in the club’s history that they’ve secured a group stage victory in a major European competition.
The victory was especially sweet for coach Andreas Brännström, who is in his second stint coaching abroad after a successful run with Hajduk Split in Croatia in 2021. “It definitely makes getting up in the morning a little easier,” Brännström said with a laugh. “This one was a bit more special.”
The win was a much-needed boost for Brännström’s team after a challenging start to their European campaign. They had suffered three consecutive defeats to Noah, Lugano, and Vittoria.
“Playing on artificial grass, well, it’s not exactly the dream scenario for teams like Roma when they travel to Borås,” Brännström explained, drawing a parallel to a Swedish team’s upset victory over Italian giants Roma. “It gave us a better chance because they’re not quite at their best. Beyond that, we played really well, especially when we won possession. We were connecting lots of forward passes, making them run more than they anticipated.”
The atmosphere in Mladá Boleslav was electric as the historic victory resonated throughout the nation. “Talking to my Czech friends, they said it was major news across the country,” Brännström revealed. “There was a lot of talk about it being historic, leading to lots of happy faces.”
While this European campaign has been a roller coaster, Brännström admitted that adapting to a new club has been a process. “When you join a new team, you always wish for full weeks of training,” he said. “It takes time, but things are starting to click now.”
Despite the triumph, Mladá Boleslav has faced challenges in the domestic Czech league, slipping down the standings after drawing several matches. The club currently sits in eleventh place, but remains only three points away from securing a coveted European play-off spot.
“We’ve had some tough matches where we should have won,” Brännström said. “This win was badly needed. It helps build credibility, especially when you’re new to the club.”
Brännström expressed his overall satisfaction with life in the Czech Republic, praising the people at the club and the general atmosphere.
“I like it here a lot,” he shared. “Good people around the club, great staff, we have what we need. It’s good football. It’s not Split, where you had a beach apartment, so it’s not quite as luxurious, but it’s still great,” he added, a smile evident in his voice.
This stunning win has breathed new life into Mladá Boleslav’s European hopes. Despite early setbacks, the team still believes they can make a push for the playoffs.
“We had a tough loss against Lugano where we missed a penalty, and we played very strong away in Portugal and deserved to get points,” Brännström reflected. “Those performances gave us confidence that we had a chance. Now, after this victory, we feel a little more alive again.”
While savoring this success, Brännström, who has a deep connection to Swedish football having played for clubs like Jönköping Södra, Mjällby and AIK and served as an Allsvenskan analyst, confessed that his time in the Czech Republic means he follows his home league a bit less than before.
“I follow it less than ever,” he admitted. “When you join a new league, you have to learn the rules, the style of football. In the first few months, you dedicate all your time to this, leaving less room for other things. But I still have a good understanding of it.”
Despite the distance, Brännström acknowledged his longing for the familiar.
“Yes, I miss having complete control over everything
that’s happening at home,” he admitted. “But that’s natural. The Allsvenskan is the league I know best. You know all the players, even the referees. It’s only natural to miss it a bit.”
Looking to the future, Brännström expressed his desire to return to the Allsvenskan someday, but not before appreciating the valuable experience and cultural immersion he’s gaining in the Czech Republic.
“I hope to return to the Allsvenskan at some point,” he stated. “But this is my second time coaching abroad. You meet new people, experience different football cultures and leadership styles. It’s valuable and enriching for coaches to change environments sometimes.”
Mladá Boleslav now turns their attention back to the domestic Czech league with their next match against Hradec Kralové.
