Brandenburg: Novel “Between Worlds” by Juli Zeh and Simon Urban comes to the stage in Zollbrücke

Status: 23.08.2024 16:25

The premiere of “Zwischen Welten” will be celebrated on Friday at the Theater am Rand in Zollbrücke (Märkisch-Oderland). This is a staged reading based on the novel of the same name by Juli Zeh and Simon Urban. There will be two performances each on Friday and Saturday in the open-air theater on the German-Polish border.

The actors Holger Daemgen and Annett Renneberg are the protagonists of these “in-between worlds”, two contrasting life experiences – one is a feature editor, the other lives in an eco-village in Brandenburg. “The aspects that particularly interested me in this novel – because I live in the country myself – are the distortions and different perspectives of urban and rural populations,” said 46-year-old Renneberg to rbb on Thursday.

WhatsApp messages and emails of the protagonists are read out

Zeh and Urban’s novel was published last year. The recording of the digital communication – on WhatsApp, Telegram or by email – between the two protagonists shows the different cultures of conflict in two social milieus. The protagonists of the novel push their friendship to its limits and take surprising personal turns, according to the Theater am Rand.

Renneberg and Daemgen read and act out the dialogue on the open-air theater stage. Under the dramaturgical direction of Thomas Rühmann, they discuss the question of how they and other people want to live in the future – as a society and as individuals. “The two of them deal with everything that is burning under our fingernails here,” Rühmann told rbb. One thing was very clear to him: “This has to be in the theater.”
