Brandenburg CDU leader Jan Redmann fined for driving while under the influence of alcohol

Brandenburg’s CDU state leader Jan Redmann has to pay a fine of 8,000 euros after driving an e-scooter while under the influence of alcohol. According to a spokesman, the Potsdam district court imposed a fine of 25 daily rates of 320 euros each. The penalty order was issued for negligent drunk driving. The withdrawal of the driving license will last for a further six months, it was said.

The CDU Brandenburg announced that Redmann had accepted the punishment. The 44-year-old is also the CDU parliamentary group leader in the Brandenburg state parliament and the top candidate for the state election on September 22nd.

Redmann is running as candidate for Prime Minister

In July, Redmann was stopped by the police during a nighttime ride on an e-scooter to his apartment in Potsdam. After the ride, he said he had just under 1.3 per mille alcohol in his blood. If the blood alcohol level is 1.1 per mille or more, this is considered a criminal offense. Redmann then informed the public himself and admitted that he had made a mistake.

Redmann is running in the election campaign to become the new Prime Minister after Dietmar Woidke (SPD). However, in one of the most recent opinion polls from early August, the CDU was behind the SPD (20 percent) and the AfD (24 percent).
