In some more severe cases, these can include:
– Confusion, agitation or hallucinations
-Confidence
-Loss of the ability to feel or become paralyzed in certain areas of the face or body
-Muscles feel weak
– Problems with speaking or listening skills
-Loss of consciousness (including comma)
Whereas in younger children, symptoms and signs can include:
-There is a lump on the soft spot (crown) on the baby’s skull
-Nausea and vomiting
-Body feels stiff

The cause of inflammation of the brain is not certain. However, the most common is caused by a viral infection. In addition, bacterial infections and non-contagious inflammatory conditions can cause inflammation of the brain.
Basically, there are two types of inflammation of the brain:
1. Primary brain inflammation
This condition occurs when a virus or other agent directly infects the brain. The infection may be concentrated in one area or widespread. Primary infection may be reactivation of the inactivated virus after previous disease.
2. Secondary inflammation of the brain
This condition results from the reaction of the damaged immune system to infection elsewhere in the body. Instead of just attacking the cells that cause infection, the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells in the brain. Also known as post-infectious encephalitis, secondary encephalitis often occurs two to three weeks after the initial infection.
